Book crossing
Jan. 30th, 2004 09:39 pmI've just come across a web site called Book Crossing (www.bookcrossing.com) which encourages people to 'release' books they enjoy into the wild' so that other people can enjoy them. By this they mean leaving the book with labels they will sell you telling the finder why the book has been left in this public place and asking them to read it and leave it somewhere else for someone else to find.
This site came to my attention because we found a copy of Order of the Phoenix on a table in the Reference library with these labels attached.
They ask you to send them an e-mail telling them where you found the book and what you thought of it and tell them what you did with it.
Since all the staff had already read this we left it where it was and it walked out later with one of our oldies who use the Ref as a way to keep down the heating bills by spending the day with us reading the newspaper and socialising (very quietly) with their cronies. He came asked us if it was OK to take it first though.
It had arrived here at the Ref after being left at Cardiff museum, I went to the web site and looked. There was no message saying who or how it got to us so I left a message telling them that it was still traveling.
This idea interests me greatly. It started in the USA and this is, as I said a first for me. Has anyone out there come across any of these books?
