1. Your favourite toy as a child.
My teddy, I used to carry him round by a paw so that he developed holes in them. Some time in the 70s my mother covered his paws with psycodelically patterned black and white towelling. I still have them and you still need dark glasses to look at his paws
2. Your favourite meal as a child.
My Grandmothers Lamb broth. It took three days to cook, simmering on the side of the fire. It was a real knife and fork broth with every root vegetable known to man and lots of neck of lamb.
3. Your favourite clothing item as a child.
My yellow silk party dress. My Aunt and Uncle were housekeeper and Chaufer for a very rich family whose daughter was a little older than me so I had a lot of her hand me downs as my relatives didnot have a daughter. I don‘t remember most of them but I cried when I grew out of the Yellow silk.
4. Your favourite cartoon show as a child?
I can not really remember many cartoons from my child hood, we had the Disney cartoons as shorts at the cinema but I wasn’t too fond of them. The one I remember from TV didn’t show until I was a teenager and I think my favourite then was Noggin the Nog.
5. Your favourite place to visit when you were a child?
Any museum, Each year my parents would ask me what I wanted for my birthday treat and each year I would ask for a trip to Cardiff Museum. Every time we went shopping in Newport I would nag to go into their Museum when we had finished. I still love visiting museums when I am on holiday.
6. Your favourite book(s) as a child?
Varied a great deal with age, my first favourite was Tug boat Tommy and the Silver Queen when I was about 2 years old
7. Your favourite smell(s) as a child?
The smell of Christmas Pudding being boiled ( around September they were better for keeping), Gran’s lamb stew, the Christmas cake being cooked (only 6 weeks to Christmas), qand the smell of beer being brewed. Braine’s Brewery was in the middle of Cardiff and you could smell it about 2 miles out of Cardiff so that smell meant we were almost in Cardiff and the museum would soon be mine .
8. Your best friend as a child?
Jenny White, wee met in school when we were 5 years old. I sarted school in the September of 1954 but because she had chicken pox then she didn‘t come until the January term. Our teacher asked us to put up our hand if we were willing to look after her ans show her where everything was and mine was first up. We are still friends to this day.
9. Your favourite hobby as a child?
Reading. It still is, I even taught myself to knit and read at the same time so that I could be doing something useful so I wouldn‘t be told of for reading too much.
10. Your favourite animal?
Anything with fur but specifically my first ever pet. He was a cross between a mongrel terrier type and a Pekinese with a pedigree so long that it covered 5 pages written down, Mitzi liked a bit of the rough it seems. He was about Peek size with the curled tail but Black terrier fur. My Sooty had a heart like a lion and would defend his people from anything . He had a very wide definition of his people too as it included all of my friends and anyone who was invited into the house. If he hadn‘t heard ‘Come In‘ he would attack strangers who stepped over the threshhold. Since he got a little deaf in later life we had to shout it at the meter readers and explain later.
11. Most embarrassing moment when you were young?
I don‘t remember any of them. I‘ve wiped them from my memory .
12. Something odd you did as a child?
I was considered odd outside the family because I read so avidily but that was a family trait so I thought the non readers were the odd ones. I was also considered odd because I never learnt to ride a bike. I‘ve since learnt that my very frequent bouts of ear infections had even then affected my balance so I would never have been able to learn..
13. What was a bad habit you had as a child?
Biting my nails when nervous, I still do it.
14. What was something you feared as a child?
Mr. Jone‘s goat. He kept it the field next to our park and there was no fence between only a row of thorn trees. I was always afraid he would slip his tether and come and eat my clothes.
15. Name one thing you could have back now from your childhood?
The belief that there was nothing in the world to worry about, everything was perfect.
