The cathedral close is where all the Cathedral staff from Bishop down to the youngest chopir boy once lived.  These days its mostly just the higher clergy and if the Cathedral has a choir school, which Ely does, then several of the buildings have been converted into schools.  These days girls as well as boys sing in the choir so the youngest could well be a girl.

This old gnarled tree was growing in one of the close gardens, it's probably not much younger than the house whose grounds it stands in.

This reminds me of the cloisters I've seen in monastery ruis like Tintern.  Ely is old enough to have started as a monastery church so
they might be.

The Elizabethans had a thing for fancy chimneys and ely has it's fair share of them.

previous dynasties just went for sensible.

how mellow the stone looks in the sun

I love those chimneys, there is a village not far from Guildford where almost every building has them. Can't think of the name. Checked the map, Albury
