My baby God daughter is doing a course on animal care at Usk Agricultural College, she wants to be a vet. nurse eventually. In this course she has to do 2 weeks working with animals every year. Last year she worked in the dog grooming shop just round the corner from her home, she was too shy at 16 to go any further afield. She was 17 last October and when she told me earlier this year where she was doing her practical I asked who was she and what had she done with Laura. She and two other girls are going to South Africa to work in an animal hospital on one of the Reserves.
Now this doesn't sound as if it has any thing to do with my subject but I'm getting there. She leaves on Sunday so this morning I went to Newport to pick up the Rand I promised to get her for spending money. It wasn't looking too bright so I did wear a short mac. but in the space of leaving the Bureau de Change and crossing the road to the bakery I got soaked. The temperature dropped about 10 degrees(or that's what it felt like)and the rain came down in waterfalls. I've never been in Monsoon rains but it looked like one, I was soaked through to the skin. Of course it rained all the way back to the car and as soon as I stepped inside the rain stopped.
Beth and Jill are off on holiday today, Losyn is already in kennels and they are busy packing. They are driving up to London today to stay with their niece and family and then on down to Dover tomorrow to the boat. They are cruising the Baltic stopping off at various ports, last stop St' Peter'sberg. I am green with envy and I hate being on boats, I'm phobic about being on or in deep water.
This does mean I am at total leisure for 2 weeks myself so be prepared for Picspam, I'm thinking of taking the train to Cardiff and photographing the street furniture down by the docks. You have been warned.

Two weeks of leisure...that sounds nice.

You're alright with shallow water then?

Yep canals, shallow rivers and streams and swimming pools I can stand up in with my head above water and I have no problems, I can cope with deep water boats if it's only a few hours but any longer and I can feel the panic rising. I think it comes of being pushed into the deep end of the local swimming pool when I was about 8 and couldn't really swim properly and probably would have drowned if it wasn't for a grown up in there pulling me up and getting me out, no such things as life guards 50 years ago. I can't bare to put my head under water for the same reason.

You know, weather is very weird: we had one-week rainforest climate - oppresive and HUMID, local storms with hails, floods, fires caused by lightnings and other joys. The I saw a Meteosat situation - all the cold front sitting just above Britain! Looked horrible. The night from yesterday to today saw "your" front passing CR and there were really downpours. The temperature is now 17°C - it is 8.30 morning ( you are minus one hour), I wonder...
Ah, lucky girls! I wish I was young, I would very much like do travelling, working or studying abroad. But my generation were not allowed to. So good luck to them.
And I look forward to the pics!

The weather is totally mad this year not the same from one day to the next. It's 8:00 am and the sun is shining from a blue sky with whisps of fluffy white cloud and I have put the central heating in because I am cold, it's March out there not July.
I envy Laura and her friends also, we were allowed to travel but as a working class family we couldn't afford to. Holidays for me were a caravan hired for a week at the seaside only about 25 miles from home. If you went to South Africa it was for life, as a British colony you could emigrate there but it was as much a one way trip as the convicts got when they were shipped out to Australia. Now I can afford it I'm to old and infirm to do it. Ah well, she is very like me so she will have a thousand pictures to show me when she gets back.
