And I am at last ready to admit she is right. I was say to Beth the other day that I wished we had had the fore thought to take a picture of the Chapel the gave my village it's name. It was demolished when we were in our mid to late teens so there were cameras around they might not have been perfect but at least there would be a record.

She then informed me, that having bought a painting of the canal lock at Newbridge from a local artist her mother had commissioned him to paint the chapel and that the picture was hanging in the main bedroom where it had hung for about 40 years. I have been in that room a thousand times, I have even slept, badly even when sleeping in a double bed and animal(in this case Losyn) will take 80% of it for themselves,in that room on several occasions. I've been up tonight to photograph it but it hasn't turned out well, I'll try again in daylight. Can you scan/photocopy an oil painting? .

I'd keep trying to photograph it from different angles. Oil paintings reflect camera flash, so if you can get the room well lit and take the photo without flash it might be better.

Yes I will go up on the next sunny day, some time in June the way the weather is here, and take it outside and photograph it in natural light.

But it is good news, isn“t it? You have got a historical document and a very nice painting in one! And yes, it is true, we often just pass things without even realising them - and some really bad people, for example I, even pass other people, not only things!
So much for your self-criticism! :-)

That is something we can all blame ourselves for but we can at least admit our faults, there are very bad people who do not think it is a fault.

You know, it's possible there's a photo of your chapel on the net somewhere-- why don't you try googling the name of your village and 'chapel' on an image search?

I was talking about it with Beth because I had spent a fruitless hour trying to find it on the net. While there are many histories of Chapels of Ease on the net, with illustrations, our little one is not amongst them. There are at least 5 of the still existing Welsh Baptist Chapel up round the corner, including one I took, but not the lost one at the bottom of the Hill.

Have you got anything like a parish newsletter where you could inquire if anyone has a photo of it?

Unfortunately no, I could put an add in the local newspaper but I'm not that curious to see if one exists to pay the extortionate fees they charge.

You could try the local freecyle groups or ask at the local library about putting up an ad.

Pretty painting. You can scan paintings - but you'd probably have to do it in parts and re-stitch together (depending on how big it is). You might also still get the glare from the reflection.

I bet you could copy it yourself... !

That's what I want a photo for, trying to get details for sketching out of an oil painting is not easy. My memory of it is 40+ years old but between,Beth Jill and myself we are remembering most of them.

I think entropy_house is on to something with the parish newsletter. Also, does the local library or museum have a collection of local history? I bet that *somebody* made an etching or an engraving or watercolor that's in the collection, or that appeared in an old book that they have a copy of.

The only one likely to have anything is Newport Central Library and during the two stints I did as a reference assistant there I photocopied everything they had on my village. But I have had a thought I am a member of a local recycling group on line. Some onehas already asked for an old newspaper there I'll try asking for photos.

Do you think it's our age? The way we want a record of the things of our youth.

Age and the niggling feeling that we are the last generation to care that there was a history before they were born.
