But this is on a happier note. I've been trying out my water colour pencils this evening and have produced something I'm not ashamed to show you. I already know the colours are wrong, I picked up the wrong colour for the blue remembered hills(they should be purple blue) and just carried on from there with slightly wild colours with out starting again. Critique on technique is what I want.

Oops forgot the original, this was given to the class last term to try and duplicate.

Well I have seen hills that blue. The Cheviots in Northumberland get like that in the evening sun in the distance.

I particularly like your sky & the use of blank paper is quite effective. I like the green hill's lighter patches of yellow-green, giving it more definition & texture. The boldness of your blue mountain is quite pleasing even if it doesn't match the actual mountain (in art, recreating what exists isn't the aim, anyway).

The composition perhaps could have been strengthened by a darkish vertical element near the left, starting near the little blue plants and meeting/going slightly into/possibly even a little above, the mountains. You have a zig-zag leading up from the right bottom which doesn't quite 'connect with the slope of the hills so that the viewer's gaze wanders 'out' of the image.

Try laying some thin dark object over the painting & see what you think of the effect (a paintbrush, pencil, strip of colored paper or even a length of yarn would do.)

I was laying in bed and realised I hadn't up loaded what I was copying, or trying to, it's up now. Thank you for your comments about the sky, it is the first one I've done that I am pleased with and to be honest I prefer my colours to the original, I find that one rather monochrome.

Monochrome can be good, too. In this one it sets a sombre mood, which may have been the artist's intent.

I never pretend being an art expert, but I am an art LOVER, which means I like the art or notlike it. very personal. And I like your paintings, especially the second one, which is very "moody"(?). Lovely!
