After 160+ years some one has pressed the self destruct button on my house. Strangely enough it's not the oldest things in the house that are failing , it's the newest. I''ve already told you about the toilet flush refusing to flush, not surprising it had been in use since 1972, I had to have a tap replaced on the bathroom basin back in December, that was the same vintage as the flush. This afternoon I shut the cutlery draw in the kitchen and there was a crunch and a series of tinkles. On opening it I found the bottom had come out and all my cutlery was now residing on the floor behind the bottom drawer. I've got most of them out but I have to wait for Beth to come back from walking Losyn and having a bit of a rest before I can get them all out, my arms just aren't long enough. I could probably reach them if I risked getting down on the floor but I'm frightened I'll undo all the good the physio. has done. That kitchen is only 9 years old, the shelves in the pantry are probably as old as the house and they are still as sound as ever. They just don't make tings to last these days.

They really don't make them like they used to.

Built in obsolescence rules.

But we're the sort who will beat them by going out and buying a new piece of ply and slotting it in place of the old base.

We are, when we work out how to remove the drawer from the slot. In the meanwhile I have had a massive clear out and my cutlery draw is now the second one down.

Oh how well I know the feeling of the place declining and falling (we're looking at large-scale plumbing work soon...)

Sympathies, I am looking forward to a complete rewire in August. Nothing apparently wrong with the wiring but it doesn't meet current standards. I was lat rewired 30 years ago.

Isn't it weird how things go wrong all at once? In one month's time, I had a plumber, an electrician, and a fireplace repair guy out all for different things.

The law of threes we call it here, bad things always come in threes.

Ha, they sure don't build things to last these days. I hope you were able to retrieve all your cutlery.

Yes everything has been retrieved thanks to Beth. I'm only 5ft 4ins, Beth is 5ft 11ins. We have two heights in my family very short ( my mother, me one of Mams great nieces, and a male cousin) and very tall(everyone else) To paraphrase Kermit, it's not easy being short.

Glad to hear everything was retrieved!
Most of my family is short even the men, there are a few tall people but "tall" is still under 6ft.
