I'm having computer problems. It's not surprising as it is terribly underpowered and still working on Windows 98SE. But I was brought up not to replace anything that is still functional and/or repairable and I'm miserly enough to still abide by it.

Just after logging on and before I actually did anything I got the blues screen with the message to press any key to continue or ctrl/alt/delete to restart. I chose the latter. I got another blue sreen with half a dozen messages all in separate squares, none of which I remember, and then the computer died. I moved away from the computer and started thinking about when I might get somewhere to buy a new one when it started up all by itself. So if I suddenly drop out of the world I'm still alive but the computer isn't. I think I will have to put aside a lifetime of frugality and buy a new computer before the old one dies.

I feel your pain! I'm still having things installed on Tufty, and I don't feel comfortable yet with the new operating system--and that's before the bill comes!

Please take advantage of what could be temporary computer function to BACK EVERYTHING UP and maybe e-mail yourself your most important files. That way, it'll be simple to install the files to the new computer from the back up.

I am a bit of a Luddite when it comes to records I keep nothing on my computer that it would be difficult to replace. I keep hard copies of all bills and and orders I place on line and although I have an address book on my computer I still have a dead tree version too. I am definitely a belt and braces type. There are a few stories I have on hard drive I must send to myself though.

I'm that way too; I still use an old twin tub washing machine that's older than some of my Small Relatives, because it hasn't given up yet and so we never get round to getting new...

But as [livejournal.com profile] executix suggests, we do back up everything we can think of onto CDs once every 4-5 months, so when it happens... we'll have them.

There's nothing on my hard drive that I don't have hard copy versions of as well, I'm a belt and braces sort as far as that is concerned. But there are a few fic on my hard drive that I must mail to myself. Backing up onto the only portable form I have, floppy discs, won't do much good as any new computer probably won't have a floppy disc access. When I get a better computer I will be backing up regularly

My computer is only up to date(ish) because of pressure from youngest. It's difficult to fight the pressure when she's willing to put some of her own money into the up date.

That is one problem I don't have. I'm a computer addict but not one that must have the latest of everything.

If you have any important files on your computer, now might be a good time to back them up on a CD or server somewhere!

I don't keep anything important on my hard drive without keeping a hardcopy as well, I'm a bit of a Luddite when it comes to that%).

I am however busy sending icons, stories and other odds and ends from my one e-mail addy to the other. Thank goodness I have a Gmail account with virtually unlimited memory.

Good luck with the computer. Ours is getting old now, but if you buy a new one it's obsolete as soon as you unpack it.
I got the blues screen Sounds fun - saxophone playing too? ;o)
