On Monday I took a cousin over to Caerphilly for an interview and while he was in there I took my camera for a walk arounf the out side of the castle.
The first photo shows what tghe castle was like before Cromwell knocked it about a bit. It's difficult to see but there is a very narrow bit of moat going around the outside of the tower on the left as you are looking at it.
Under the cut is what it looks like to day.

The moat now, and possibly always, passes under the walk way connecting the main castle with this out laying bit. as the hole looks as old as the rest of the wall.

There are a couple of Guard robe exits in this wall, one that still opens into the moat and can be seen in first photo under the cut and one in the curce of the tower.
.
This tower is a secondary entrance to the castle.

Complete with drawbridge, the twi square holes would be where the hawsers exited the towere to raise and lower it.
And portculus

And some lovely arching in side though no murder holes I could see.

From the bridge that has replaced the drawbridge you can see the reason for the extension, Medieval Heavy artilary.

You get a good view of the main gate and width of the moat from the bridge too.

And this is the residential part of the castle.

We get a good view of the leaning tower from the bridge too.
Finally a full frontal view of the castle main gatfe taken from the town.
